Supermarket stop turns into $100,000 Power Play win for Rhode Island man

Cranston, RI - Robert Shea of Wakefield is feeling grateful after winning $100,000 playing Powerball® with the Power Play® feature. He purchased his winning Quick Pick ticket at Shaw’s Supermarket, located at 160A Old Tower Hill Road in Wakefield.

Shea, who worked in the medical field for 33 years, says he typically plays on a whim. “Since the jackpot was high, I decided to play,” he said. Shea also occasionally plays Wild Money and visits casinos, but this is his biggest win ever. After the drawing, Shea checked the ticket on the Rhode Island Lottery app. At first, he thought he had won $100 and carried the ticket around with him all day—keeping it in his car’s console. When he went to cash it in, the clerk told him they couldn’t pay that amount there, so he thought maybe it was $5,000.

Later that evening, he asked his partner, a financial analyst, to double-check the ticket. That’s when Shea remembered he had played Power Play®. Then, together, they figured out they had been holding onto $100,000 and couldn’t believe it.

Shea plans to use his winnings to travel to Aruba and re-pave his driveway.

Powerball® tickets are $2, and adding the Power Play® option for $1 can multiply non-jackpot winnings by 2, 3, 4, 5, or 10 times, depending on the multiplier drawn. The Power Play® multiplier for Shea’s win was 2, doubling his $50,000 prize to $100,000.
