A thrilling update to the night of millionaires - one Massachusetts Lottery player had TWO $1 million-winning tickets from last Wednesday’s Powerball drawing!
Paul Corcoran, of Fitchburg, MA, purchased separate tickets for the Wednesday, July 9 Powerball drawing. According to the Massachusetts Lottery, Corcoran initially bought a ticket for seven Powerball drawings and mistakenly thought the final drawing on that ticket had already occurred, leading him to purchase another multi-draw ticket that also included the July 9 drawing.
Both Powerball tickets matched all five white balls drawn that night – white balls 5, 9, 25, 28, 69 and red Powerball 5 – resulting in Cocoran winning two $1 million prizes. He claimed his two $1 million prizes (before taxes) Friday, July 11 at the Massachusetts State Lottery’s Dorchester headquarters.
Corcoran told the Massachusetts Lottery the wins feel good, and that he does not have any plans for his winnings yet.
Last Wednesday’s Powerball drawing produced eight winning Match 5 tickets worth $1 million each (CA-2, FL, IL-2, MA-2, NE) and one winning Match 5 + Power Play ticket worth $2 million in Texas. Note: In California, prize payouts are pari-mutuel and determined by sales and the number of winners.
The Powerball jackpot is up to an estimated $264 million ($119.7 million cash value) for the next drawing tomorrow night. Powerball® tickets are $2 per play. Tickets are sold in 45 states, the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands.
More than half of all proceeds from the sale of a Powerball ticket remain in the jurisdiction where the ticket was sold. Since its first drawing in 1992, the Powerball game has helped generate more than $36 billion for good causes supported by U.S. lotteries.
Powerball drawings are broadcast live every Monday, Wednesday and Saturday at 10:59 p.m. ET from the Florida Lottery draw studio in Tallahassee, Fla. Powerball drawings are also live streamed on Powerball.com.
The overall odds of winning a prize are 1 in 24.9. The odds of winning the jackpot are 1 in 292.2 million.
