'It’s just a dollar,’ Kentucky man adds Power Play to Powerball ticket and triples his winnings

Persistence paid off for a Standford, Ky. man after he consistently added Power Play® to his Powerball® tickets. His decision paid off in a big way, winning him $150,000.

William Elliott discovered just hours after the July 19th drawing that he had a winning ticket.

"I check my numbers every night on my phone,” he said. “I was up at like one or two o’clock Sunday morning. I noticed where I had the Powerball, and I looked, and I’ve got that number and that one and that one and that one. That can’t be right, so I checked it again.”

The winning ticket matched four white ball winning numbers and the Powerball®, winning $50,000 but the prize was multiplied to $150,000 since he added the Power Play feature to his ticket for an additional $1. The Power Play number drawn was 3.

“It’s just a dollar. You see what it did, it won me one hundred and fifty thousand dollars,” Elliott said.

His wife, Shirley, was in bed asleep when he went into the bedroom and said, “you need to get out of bed.”

“He scared me,” she said. “He said, ‘You need to get up. I’ve won five numbers on Powerball.’ I was half asleep, so I didn’t know what to think,” Shirley said.

“He has been the most faithful person to get a ticket. He always gets us a ticket,” Shirley said.

Elliott purchased the winning ticket at the Kroger on Skywatch Drive in Danville where he often buys his lottery tickets. "I always get my tickets from the same place, and this time it really paid off," he added. Kroger will receive $1,500 for selling the winning ticket.

The Lincoln County couple drove to lottery headquarters the following Monday where Elliott received a check for $108,000 after taxes.

“It hasn’t sunk in yet,” Elliott told lottery officials.

When asked about their plans for the winnings, the couple said they intend to save the money for future needs. "We're just going to put it in the bank and have it there for when we need it," they said. "It's a nice little cushion for us."

In 2025, the Kentucky Lottery paid out more than $1.6 billion in prizes. Kentucky Lottery proceeds have funded scholarships and grants for more than 1 million Kentucky college students.
